A dead heat is a tie for a position that pays: two runners cross the line together, or two golfers finish level in a market that pays the top finisher. The book neither pays in full nor takes the whole stake. It splits the stake by the number of tied selections and pays only that share at the full odds. This page works the arithmetic through and then shows where a push bet and a void bet differ.
For the wider set of markets these rules sit inside, read the betting markets overview for WJ2 readers.
How a dead heat splits your stake
The rule has two steps, in this order. First divide your stake by the number of selections that tied. Then multiply only that share by the full odds. The remaining share loses.
- Count the selections tied for the position that pays.
- Divide your stake by that count.
- Multiply the divided stake by the full decimal odds. That is your return.
- The other shares of the stake are lost.
Note the full odds, not odds cut by the number of ties. The reduction comes from the stake, which is why a dead heat is also called a stake reduction.
Worked example: a two-way and a three-way tie
These are illustrations with round numbers chosen for the arithmetic. They are not odds from WJ2 or from any book. Take a stake of ₱100 on a selection at decimal odds of 5.00, in a market that pays the winner.
| Situation | Stake used | Return | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wins outright | ₱100 | ₱100 x 5.00 = ₱500 | Profit ₱400 |
| Dead heat, 2 tied | ₱100 / 2 = ₱50 | ₱50 x 5.00 = ₱250 | Profit ₱150 |
| Dead heat, 3 tied | ₱100 / 3 = ₱33.33 | ₱33.33 x 5.00 = ₱166.67 | Profit ₱66.67 |
| Loses | none | ₱0 | Loss ₱100 |
In the two-way tie, half of your ₱100 is paid at 5.00 and the other half is lost, so you collect ₱250 in total. A winning bet that ties still returns more than your stake at these odds, but far less than an outright win. At very short odds a dead heat can return less than the stake, which surprises players the first time.
Push bet: the result lands on the line
A push bet is a bet whose result lands exactly on the number the bet was set on. If a total is set at 3 goals and the match ends with exactly 3, an over bet and an under bet both push. The whole stake returns to you. Nothing is divided and no odds are applied.
| Term | What triggers it | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| Dead heat | Selections tie for a paying position | Stake divided by the tied count, paid at the full odds |
| Push bet | Result equals the line exactly | Full stake, no winnings |
Void bet: the bet is cancelled
A void bet is cancelled before it can be settled. Typical causes are a match that is abandoned, a player who does not take part, or an event the book’s rules say does not count. Your stake returns, the same as a push, but the reason differs: a push comes from a result, a void comes from the event or selection not going ahead.
Example: a three-leg accumulator with one void leg becomes a two-leg bet at the remaining legs’ odds multiplied, for instance 2.00 x 1.50 = 3.00 instead of 2.00 x 1.50 x 1.80 = 5.40. A pushed or void leg is usually removed and the bet carries on with the remaining legs, which lowers the combined odds. Read how the book words this in its rules before you place a multi-leg bet, and see how correlated legs are priced on same game parlay legs from one match. The Sports menu of the WJ2 lobby lists a BTI lane among its books, and reading the BTI sportsbook slip covers where to find the settlement rules on a slip.
Where to read the rule before you bet
Dead heat wording is set by each book and can differ in detail, so read it rather than assume it.
- Open the book’s rules or help text from the bet slip.
- Find the settlement section and search for “dead heat”.
- Check whether it applies to place terms as well as outright winners.
- Check how a void or pushed leg changes a multi-leg bet.
FAQ
What is a dead heat in betting?
It is a tie for a position that pays, such as two runners sharing first place. The book divides your stake by the number of tied selections and pays only the share on your selection at the full odds.
Is a dead heat the same as a push?
No. A push returns the whole stake because the result landed exactly on the line. A dead heat pays part of the stake at the full odds and loses the rest.
Is a void bet the same as a loss?
No. A void bet is cancelled and the stake goes back to you. It is not a win and it is not a loss.
Saan ko mababasa ang dead heat rule ng sportsbook?
